Director of Learning and Development (pre-opening)

Business Unit:  The Peninsula London Corporate Office

The Peninsula London, superbly located at 1-5 Grosvenor Place in Belgravia, will overlook Hyde Park Corner, the Wellington Arch, Green Park and the gardens of Buckingham Palace. Upon completion, the hotel will have 189 guestrooms with 26 luxury Peninsula-branded residential apartments. The construction budget for the project is in the region of £800 million and our ambition is for the hotel and residences to set new standards in luxury and service in the London market with completion currently scheduled for 2022. Located in the highly prestigious Belgravia district of London, The Peninsula London is seeking to hire a personable Director of Learning and Development who has strong experience opening luxury hotels whilst creating programmes that allow newly formed teams to succeed in fun highly paced environments.

Key accountabilities


  • Develop pre-opening L&D strategies and initiatives which will positively create a culture of learning, team unity and operational excellence.
  • Develop management and competency programmes in accordance with corporate support to support new joiners, ensure pre and post opening skill requirements are in place and future succession planning is possible to retain high performing colleagues.
  • Co-ordinate and conduct training and culture building activities for all departments including playing an active role in the selection of the pre-opening team.
  • Implement trainee onboarding programmes targeting specific tertiary organisations to ensure best in class trainee hires.  
  • Develop and update training materials / manuals post opening to support the hotel’s ongoing operations.


General requirements


  • Minimum 5 years relevant Learning and Development practical experience in the same capacity  (ideally within the luxury hotel segment or luxury retail).
  • Pre-opening of a 5-star hotel or large-scale operation (highly desirable)
  • Strong team leader, applies creativity to work, highly adaptable, naturally positive with a fun attitude
  • Fluent English communication proficiency
  • Exceptional personal presentation as this role will be a brand ambassador
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Office applications, e.g. Words, Excel, PowerPoint
